As the extent of the devastation and ever increasing death toll caused by the 7.8 magnitude earthquake and large aftershocks that hit Turkey on February 6 has become increasingly clear, Word & Deed has been in touch with multiple partners in Turkey, some of which are working with churches that are located in the area of the earthquake. One pastor and his wife were killed when their home collapsed. Church members are providing food, blankets and even some shelter to victims of the earthquake. Word & Deed is sending $15,000 USD ($20,000 CAD) in relief funds, with plans to send much more in the coming weeks as the opportunities for direct intervention continue to be available. May the Lord have mercy on the people of Turkey. Please pray for the people, leaders, and the church in Turkey, along with all who are seeking to help them.
FEBRUARY 15, 2023 UPDATE:
Word & Deed is sending $25,000 USD ($33,000 CAD) to partner affiliated churches to fund food packages, hot meals, water, blankets, clothing, tents, and sleeping bags. An additional $100,000 USD ($133,000 CAD) has been approved for distribution in the near future. Please pray for those mourning the loss of loved ones, the injured and all those striving to bring much needed help, especially those doing so in the Name of the Lord.
MARCH 1, 2023 UPDATE:
Word & Deed continues to work through partner churches in Turkey. One group of churches has well over 150 volunteers in 6 impacted cities who are providing tents, blankets, and food to victims of the earthquake. So far $50,000 USD / $67,000 CAD has been sent. Beneficiaries are noting how joyfully the Christians are helping them. Word & Deed is taking part in multiple calls with partners to share lessons learned from over 35 disaster relief efforts that we have participated in over the last 20 years. Please pray for the ongoing efforts to bring help for both body and soul for the precious people of Turkey.
