Venezuela Earthquakes

Word & Deed is closely monitoring and praying about the impact of the two powerful earthquakes (magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5) that struck northern Venezuela on Wednesday evening, June 24, affecting the capital Caracas and the surrounding region. Venezuela has endured years of economic collapse, government corruption, and failing infrastructure, and these earthquakes have only added to the country’s ongoing challenges.

Word & Deed has church partners in Caracas who have reported that most of their members are safe, although some have experienced significant property damage and economic loss.

Another church partner has a church family located to the north of La Guaira–the area most impacted by the earthquakes. Communication remains limited, and some members have not yet been reached. This weighs heavily on them as more than 600 deaths and over 3,000 injuries have been formally reported so far.

Another church partner is currently travelling to the hardest-hit area with two relief assessment teams and will provide updates as more information becomes available. Although international rescue teams are now arriving, many people remain trapped under collapsed buildings. Many other buildings have been deemed structurally unsafe and so numerous residents are living outside with need for food and water.

Word & Deed is committed to standing alongside our partners and other trusted organizations as they assess the situation, identify the greatest needs, and determine how best to respond. Thank you for your continued prayers for our brothers and sisters in Venezuela.
