Sexual and physical abuse of children is a sad reality in Guatemala. Often, local officials turn a blind eye or are even complicit in cover-up. Victims of abuse and their families are required to fund prosecution of their abusers. Since most people are poor in Guatemala, this rarely happens and abuse continues to grow. This project funds three AMG lawyers to work with the government to prosecute and punish abusers. With abusers incarcerated for their crimes, victims no longer face them on the streets and the message to the community is that abuse will no longer be tolerated. Teachers at AMG schools and after-school programs are trained to detect changes in the behavior of children that indicate stress or trauma. A separately funded team consisting of a chaplain, Christian psychologist, and a social worker, works with families if a problem in the life of a child is identified. Upon further investigation, if criminal acts are confirmed, the three lawyers funded by this program work with the government to prosecute.
